Quick Navigation
Use Strong and Unique Passwords
A weak or reused password makes your account an easy target.
- At least 12–16 characters
- A mix of uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and special characters
- Avoid common words, birthdates, and predictable phrases
Use a password manager:
Apps like Bitwarden, 1Password, or LastPass generate and store strong passwords securely.
Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
2FA adds an extra security layer by requiring a second form of verification.
Recommended 2FA Methods:
- Authenticator Apps (Google Authenticator, Authy) – Most secure
- Security Keys (YubiKey, Titan Security Key) – Best for high security
- SMS Verification – Better than nothing but less secure
How to Enable 2FA:
- Visit your account’s Security Settings
- Enable Two-Factor Authentication
- Choose your preferred method and follow setup instructions
Regularly Check for Data Breaches
Hackers often leak stolen passwords online. Check if your credentials have been compromised.
Use “Have I Been Pwned”
- Visit HaveIBeenPwned.com
- Enter your email and check if it’s been exposed
- Change compromised passwords immediately
Check Google and Browser Alerts:
- Google’s Password Manager alerts users about breached credentials
- Chrome, Firefox, and Edge have built-in password monitoring tools
Be Cautious with Emails and Links
Phishing is one of the most common ways hackers steal account credentials.
How to Spot Phishing Emails:
- Check the sender’s email address – Avoid fake domains
- Look for spelling errors – Scam emails often have mistakes
- Hover over links – Don’t click suspicious links before verifying
- Never download unknown attachments
If an email claims your account is locked, go directly to the official website instead of clicking the link.
Secure Your Devices and Apps
Your accounts are only as secure as the devices you use to access them.
Keep software and apps updated
- Regular updates fix security vulnerabilities
Use a secure network
- Avoid logging in on public Wi-Fi without a VPN
Enable automatic logouts
- Set inactive sessions to log out automatically on sensitive accounts
Monitor Account Activity
Many services offer activity logs where you can check for unauthorized logins.
How to Check Login Activity:
- Google: security.google.com → Security → Recent Activity
- Facebook: Settings → Security & Login → Where You’re Logged In
- Microsoft: account.microsoft.com/security
Sign out of old or unknown devices immediately.
